Franklin Dow started playing trumpet when he was six years old. His bachelor s in fine arts and master s of education in music are from the University of New York at Buffalo. He was director of music in a school district in western New York state for 40 years. He was conductor of the Buffalo Civic Orchestra for 40 years and played in the Buffalo Symphony for 22 years. He was also with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. In his years with these groups he played for the big names on the vaudeville circuit. He later played for the Liberace show.|
After moving to Tucson Franklin played with the Tucson Concert Band, Civic Orchestra of Tucson, where he served on the board of directors, the Arizona Symphonic Winds and played in and conducted several dance bands. In 1996 he helped form and conducted The Old Pueblo Brass Band. This is a British style band of which there are only two in the state of Arizona.
He served four years in the Coast Guard stationed in New York. He formed, directed and played in a band at the Coast Guard Station at Manhattan Beach just outside of New York City.
Mr. Dow liked the music of Tchaikovsky and his favorite present day trumpet player is Wynton Marsalis, known for jazz and classical.
